Benefits of Nasal Sculpting (Rhinoplasty)
Rhinoplasty is performed to reduce the size of a nose, change the shape of the tip, narrow the nostrils, change the angle or elevate the tip. It can also eliminate a hump on the bridge or build up the bridge and straighten a nose that is crooked. Nasal surgery also can straighten a crooked nose. While most nasal surgery is done to correct problems due to heredity or accident, aging can cause the nose to droop as it often looses support, making the nose appear longer. In addition, the nose may also appear larger and more bulbous, particularily in the tip area, due to changes in skin thickness. More than any procedure, nasal surgery can enhance your appearance and complement your other features.

How Nasal Sculpting (Rhinoplasty) is done
Rhinoplasty is the most complicated of all cosmetic surgery procedures. To be done well, it requires years of experience as well as an exceptionally aesthetic eye. Dr. Zweig may do a rhinoplasty with an open or closed approach. In a closed approach, all incisions are made from inside the nose. An open rhinoplasty requires a small incision which is hidden in the underside of the small strip between the nostrils, so the tip is exposed. This access allows more precision and better fine-tuning. The tiny stitches on the outside heal almost invisibly.
Rhinoplasty performed on teenagers should be done when their face matures, usually somewhere between 14 and 18.
Dr. Zweig has the knowledge, the skill, and the many years of experience necessary to achieve excellent, trouble-free results. He anticipates the changes caused by the aging process and adds support to the tip of the nose to prevent drooping. He is a master!

Anesthesia
Most often rhinoplasty procedures are performed in our AAAHC-accredited outpatient surgery center under general anesthesia. Dr. Zweig has done rhinoplasty procedures using only a local anesthetic and light conscious sedation, but most patients prefer to be asleep. All patients are attended by a board-certified physician anesthesiologist.
Recovery
Although most patients report no pain after surgery, medication can be prescribed. Any mild discomfort can be easily controlled with Tylenol® (acetaminophen).
There may be a tiny cast on the bridge of the nose that remains for about seven days. If only the tip and nostrils have been refined, or an open approach has been utilized, there may be some stitches. These come out in about 4-5 days, are tiny and heal almost invisibly. Dr. Zweig uses no packing.
We recommend that cool compresses be administered during the first 24 hours to minimize swelling and possible bruising.
Many patients feel like resuming all activities in about 48 hours. Your willingness to go out with the cast is the only limiting factor. Physical exertion should be postponed.
When the cast comes off you will see some immediate improvements, but swelling, particularly in the tip, takes time to resolve. Post operative visits are important as Dr Zweig can sometimes help speed up this process. Your nose will look good at first and even better in a few weeks, but the final results of rhinoplasty may take as long as a year.
